Confluence: Samagam – Language Series

The High Commission of India, Kuala Lumpur is organising a lecture series called “Confluence: Samagam – Language Series” on prominent Indian languages spoken by the Indian community in Malaysia; mainly Tamil, Telugu, Punjabi, Malayalam, Hindi, Bengali, and Gujarati.

Madam Amrita Dash, the Counsellor (Community Affairs and Labour), High Commission of India, Kuala Lumpur informed during an online discussion on 10 June 2024 that the inaugural event on Punjabi language was conducted on 27 April 2024 and subsequently, a lecture series on Telugu language on 25 May 2024.

“We are organising a lecture on Tamil language on Friday, 28 June 2024, 4:00 pm, at the Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Indian Cultural Centre, Kuala Lumpur,” she said.

There would be seven short lectures (8–10 minutes each) by prominent speakers. The lecture would be conducted in English and is open to the public. But preregistration is required.

Among the topics to be covered are related to the development of Tamil language in Malaya/Malaysia after 1957, sustaining Tamil in Malaysia, the role of Muthamizh Padippagam, the role of Tamil writers associations, Tamil in fine arts, Tamil literature in translation, and Tamil calligraphy.

Among the speakers are Dr. Selvajothi Ramalingam (Faculty of Languages and Linguistics, Universiti Malaya), Mohanan Perumal (Malaysian Tamil Writers Association), Dr. Velu Perumal (Faculty of Design and Architecture, Universiti Putra Malaysia), and Uthaya Sankar SB (Kavyan Writers Association).
